Advanced Leadership Program

The Advanced Leadership Program is an optional program for Year 5 cadets. The decision to take part in the ALP rests with the individual cadet. If you are a cadet entering Level 4 this training year and would like to participate in the ALP next year, please let the Assistant Training Officer know. The Deadline to apply for the Advanced Leadership Program is October 15th of each training year. Your intent to participate in the ALP must be indicated to the Assistant Training Officer prior to this date each year.

About the Advanced Leadership Program (ALP):

Is the ALP a Requirement?

No. The ALP is an optional training opportunity. It is not a prerequisite for other opportunities, or for promotions.

Think of the ALP as professional development. It’s excellent training to have, and it can definitely help you be a more effective leader, planner and instructor. But it’s not a requirement.

Why should you take the ALP?

There are a lot of great reasons to participate in the ALP! Here are some of them:

  • You can meet and network with other senior cadets

  • There are some exciting guest speakers and workshops to help you improve your instruction and leadership skills

  • You can have a hand in planning and leading large activities for multiple corps and squadrons

  • It will help you figure out your own unique approach to leadership

  • It will help you be a more effective leader and mentor at your corps or squadron

  • The qualification will look great on your resume… for Cadets, work, and school.

What about cadets who decide not to enroll in the ALP?

The ALP is an optional training opportunity that is not a requirement for any role, position, or appointment in the program.

Cadets who choose not to participate in the ALP will keep contributing to their squadron in a role that interests them and fits their schedule.

These cadets can be level instructors, administrative or supply assistants, or coaches, just like their counterparts who choose to participate in the ALP.

they can look after a marksmanship team, band, or other activities within the squadron.

Whether they are participating in the ALP or not, all senior cadets can have the opportunity to lead and plan local activities that will appeal to their cadets.

Why is 15 October the deadline to register for the ALP?

In the ALP, all of the training builds on a set of foundational lessons. These lessons lay the groundwork for everything else you will learn in the program, and they usually happen early in the training year.  Having a 15 October deadline means everyone will be enrolled in time to participate in the foundational lessons, so no one will be left behind.

How long do I have to complete the ALP?

The ALP is designed to take one training year for a cadet to complete. A training year usually lasts from September to June.

If you aren’t able to finish all of the POs in one training year, you can continue to work on them in the next training year.

You also don’t have to decide to take the ALP right away in Year 5. You can take a year off and fill a position that interests you at your corps or squadron, and then enroll in the ALP the following year.
